blues90, It's why cheap guitars are called cheap.  lol.  They are the economy option or the "no frills" option.

When you buy a mid-tier and up guitar, they still almost always come with a case.  At least, they still do around here.

We remember too much the old prices and forget that things have gone way up in cost and therefore price.  When I think back, I realize that proportionately speaking, things haven't change all that much.

Budget guitars will not come with a case, "that's extra" for the no frills version, but decent mid-tier and up guitars will come with a case.  One example is that the Taylor I had, which was one of their cheapest models, came with a very nice, thickly padded gig-bag that was so good, it was comparable to a hard shell case and in many ways, better.  Taylor as an entire brand is basically mid-tier and up.

Of my three Alvarez guitars, one did not come with a case, (my Artist folk) but my Artist GA (one of the top tier in the Artist series) and my Masterworks dread both came with cases.

It's just like buying a car.  Buy the budget version, you get the basics.  Buy the mid-tier to top-level version?  It comes fully loaded.  The more things change, the more things stay the same.  lol. 

I have bought more used than new guitars for the most part.  Of my brand new only the Gibson J-45 came with a case.  It's a nifty looking case, but not built any better than the $100 hard cases I buy from GC.  I think they are up to $115 now.

well Jim,, if you want to talk pre-history, i think my two Espanas back in 70s came with generic cases. I'm sure i took the bus home from Anton Wilfer's Violin Shop
