2004 Seagull MJM6 CW QII - The Chase and the Repairs

I got the new latch and installed it last night.  Here is my email ti Michel at Godin.:


I got the latch today. I can now see why the original one failed and probably other latches in the field probably failed. The receptacles on the inside are too short to properly engage the pins inserted from the outside. To make it worse, the ones that were in there before where 2 different lengths, The upper one (the white one) was far too short to engage, which allowed the lower one to flex and eventually fail. The ones I received are like the black one. When I installed the latch I was only able to get the lower pin to click once. I was unable to get the upper one to engage. I had to use a clamp to compress the assembly to get 2 clicks on both pins. I hope they don't strip out with such little engagement. When closed the new latch is much tighter than the older ones, assuming because they've been closed for 10 years.

The case for my guitar has to be original from 2005.

I asked Michel at Godin about the history of TRIC cases. His reply:

"The TRIC case was launched in 2002, but was called the Fort EPP case at the time. It did not have a canvas cover and was only available for our dreadnaught models.

The name changed to TRIC in 2004 and 3 sizes were offered : dreadnaught, folk, parlor. Each size was availble in two different versions : standard and deluxe.
The deluxe version had a tan removeable canvas cover. The standard version (without the cover) was discontinued in 2012.

The new version of the Deluxe (with a non removeable black cover) was launched in 2013 at which time the dreadnaught case was replaced by the Multi-Fit case which fits, dreadnaughts, 12 string and mini jumbo models."

I have a few "weigh a ton" wooden cases and a few half the weight plastic Roadrunner cases. You might guess where I got them. Yep, CraigsList. Typically half or less than the full price. The same way I find these old Yamaha's. Just wait. And wait. And wait...
